Proactively addressing food safety risks in Minnesota’s rapidly expanding aquaponics industry

The overarching goal of this project is to advance aquaponics production and position Minnesota as national leader with innovative discovery and workforce development. To that end, we must better understand and address the food safety risks inherent with aquaponics production. The multidisciplinary team will:

  1. Assess risk factors and prevalence of pathogenic bacteria in commercial aquaponic systems.
  2. Construction of a multi-purpose on-campus model aquaponic system.
  3. Establish good agricultural practices for Minnesota aquaponic systems
  4. Develop and implement educational material and forums for Minnesota’s current and future aquaponic workforce
